In our Preschool program, we continue to emphasize building friendships and encouraging social interactions. In this part of our program, we also begin to have more focused learning time, providing opportunities for children to develop academic learning basics and critical thinking skills. We use individualized, hands-on explorations of topics that are tangible, relevant and meaningful to our children. These “studies” also provide ample opportunity for our children to continue making connections beyond the classroom. Our “studies” use play as an important vehicle for developing self-regulation and promoting language, cognition and social competence.
In our Preschool Program, we focus on seven of the nine key domains of development:
- Social/Emotional: Establishes and sustains positive adult and peer relationships; manages feelings; follows limits and expectations; responds to emotional cues; makes friends; begins to solve social problems
- Physical: Demonstrates balancing skills, gross-motor manipulative skills; demonstrates fine-motor strength and coordination; uses writing and drawing tools
- Cognitive: Attends and engages; shows curiosity and persistence; solves simple problems; shows flexibility and inventiveness in thinking; remembers and connects experiences; uses classification skills
- Language skills: Vocalizes words and uses sentences; follows instructions; engages in conversations; asks questions; uses an expanding expressive vocabulary; tells about another time or place
- Literacy: Notices and discriminates rhyme and alliteration; interacts during reading experiences and book conversations; retells stories and recounts details; writes name
- Mathematics: Counts and quantifies; understands shapes; recognizes patterns; compares and measures
- Arts: Recognizes colors; explores musical expression; explores dance and movement; enjoys pretend and costume play
